Assignment 2 : Creative Multimedia

Keyword : Creative Multimedia

Topic : Creative Multimedia is the Heart of Design

1st task : ESSAY

Creative Multimedia is the heart of the design. This title somehow will make the readers especially one who does not have any basic knowledge about multimedia feel bewildered and even mystified in understanding what the topic is all about. Plenty of questions may be arisen from this title. What is creative? What is multimedia? What is creative multimedia? What is design? I will give thorough explanations for all these questions in order to enhance your understanding and to avoid confusion.

The first question that needs to be asked is, what is design? There is no generally-accepted definition of “design” exists, and the term has different connotations in different fields however, a design informally refers to a plan for the construction of an object as in architectural blueprints, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns. Carnegie Mellon University School of Design Professor Dick Buchanan has once stated that:

"Design is the human power to conceive, plan, and realize products that serve human beings in the accomplishment of any individual or collective purpose."

Besides that, another definition of design aired by designer Richard Seymour during the Design Council's Design in Business Week 2002 is 'making things better for people' which emphasizes design activity that focuses first and foremost on human behaviour and quality of life, not factors like distributor preferences. I am agree with Seymour’s statement of design which is quite true in certain circumstances because all in all, design is actually created for the betterment of human beings. It is ‘making things better for people’ however; design itself does not contribute to make things better for people as it also depends on its features. Design is everywhere. That is why sometimes searching for a definition may not help grasping what it is. It is what drew you to the last piece of ornament you bought and it is what made online shopping possible. It has made a trip to Kuala Lumpur easier by using KL Monorel and it has turned Jimmy Choo's name into what he is now- a well known shoe designer. It all happens because of design.

What comes to mind when you think of creativity? Obviously some of the characteristics of creative person are person who is optimistic, imaginative, inventive, adventurous, taking risks and perseverance. Do you think about originality and the value of what people produce? Perhaps you think you can only be creative if you are artistic. According to Franken (1994), creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others. Creativity and design works simultaneously. In order to have an exceptional design, one needs to have a high level of creativity. It cannot be separated with each other or else the result will be dull and tedious. In addition, creativity can be simply defined as the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. Meanwhile, innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but do not act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.

Another question to ask is “what is multimedia?” Multimedia is simply multiple forms of media which are integrated together. Media can be text, graphics, still images, audio, animation, video, data, and so on. A very simple example of multimedia can be seen in a presentation using Microsoft Power Point by a student. In the presentation, the students presented his or her content with text and a related video to improve the listeners’ understanding of the topic presented. The combination of text and video in the presentation is an example of multimedia.

The term ‘creative’ and ‘multimedia’ are usually compounded together which creates a new word- creative multimedia. With the convergence of electronics, computing, and telecommunications, the demand in creative multimedia is escalating rapidly. Simply put, creative multimedia is forms of media which are interpreted and integrated creatively. Forms of media like animation, video and even pictures need to be injected with creativity to make things lively and vivacious. In this case, brilliant and extraordinary ideas are important to make those things come alive. Multimedia has become a huge force in American culture, industry and education. Practically any type of information that is received can be categorized as multimedia, from television, to magazines, to web pages, to movies. Multimedia is a tremendous force in both informing the public and entertaining us.

Back to the title of this essay which is ‘creative multimedia is the heart of the design’; it is absolutely true to its meaning. Creative multimedia and design solely depend with each other. They need each other in order to stay put in the market. Advertising is perhaps one of the biggest industries that use multimedia to send their message to the receiver. Radio or television is the medium of advertising which is a great way to promote an item and can significantly make the item is received by the masses with greater results. A plain, dull poster design will not be able to attract lots of audience therefore, the need of creative design is vital in delivering multimedia message with the goal of attracting numerous attention. Even a simple poster needs creativity to deliver the message for example using colourful, vibrant pictures and font so that the reader will be easily attracted to the advertisement.

Another example of creative multimedia can be seen in animation. Animation is a visual technique that provides the illusion of motion by displaying a collection of images in rapid sequence. It is mostly associated with the work of film makers. Illustrators create action from a series of images and we have the illusion of something that comes alive. Again even in animation, design and creativity play an important role to create a fine masterpiece. Whether it is a computer animation or a traditional animation; or whether it is a 2D animation or 3D animation; those are all important markers in establishing an animation. Examples of excellent animation are The Lion King, Cinderella, Ice Age, Kungfu Panda, Despicable Me, Shrek, Finding Nemo, and countless other animation which are all depend on design. Thus, creative multimedia is the heart of the design.

So my final conclusion is, creative multimedia is the heart of design. Without the design, creative multimedia would be nothing special so it is important for creative multimedia to focus on its design.

Take Home Assingment.

Besides doing the in - class activity, we were also given a take home exercise for this week extra task. This exercise includes the fact that we have to come out with seven poems or writings which best described our point of view regarding the given concepts. These concepts include the concept of life, the concept of pain, the concept of love or life, the concept love or pain as well as the concept of man or woman.

Poem Based on the Concept of Life.

Life is like the burning flame on top of an oil lamp,
Like the burning flame, our life goes unplanned every minute and seconds until the time when we drew our last breath on earth,
We would not know when is the time for us to raise up and when is the time that we will fall,
Aside from that, similar to the burning flame,
We could change our faith in the future as nothing is being planned unless we strive for them.

Poem Based on the Concept of Pain.

Pain is like a cold ice cream which melts onto earth surface,
Though at first we feel tired an sick of having the expression of pain in ourselves,
But still we do experience it more than just once in our life,
At the same time, we begin to understand the fact that,
Although it is hard to accept the feeling of pain,
However we must then accept it at last,
Since we can then learn to become a better man based on our experience of feeling pain.

Poem Based on the Concept of Love or Life.

Love or Life is like a cup of hot coffee to drink with jam and bread,
Like the hot coffee, our love affairs and life are flexible since we could decide our own future in both situations,
We could have a good life and good relationship with our loved ones or we could have a bad life in the end,
Aside from that, similar to the coffee aroma,
Both our life and love experience could be an enjoyable thing in order for us to have a better life in the future.

Poem Based on the Concept of Love or Life.

Love or Life could sometimes be associated to camouflage,
Though it is best to follow other people's attitude and ways of Life or Love,
Which then makes everyone looks the same in a certain angle or point of view,
But then if we see them carefully there is slight difference between them,
Since no one could do exactly what someone else does in real life,
Which then leads to the conclusion that only a certain people who observe closely,
Could differentiate between a true love or life experience and the fraud one.

Poem Based on the Concept of Happiness.

Happiness is like time which waits for no man,
Similar to the ticking of the clock, happiness does not last forever,
Sometimes we as human being feel sad, angry as well as fear in a certain period of time based on what the occasion is,
Therefore, as a result we have to spend our time of happiness wisely,
As the time goes on and the happiness gone is replaced by other moods,
and we will lose the mood of happiness forever.

Poem Based on the Concept of Happiness.

Happiness is like a kitten which enjoys itself every day,
Like a kitten, happiness will enhance us to become energetic as well as hyperactive,
Causing us to forget all the problem that we encounter all day long in school and in office.

Poem Based on the Concept of Love or Pain.

Love or Pain is like the relation between a chick and a kitten.
There are no boundaries in a relationship but still we need to be aware of our surroundings,
Because we cannot be pretty sure that there would not be any misunderstandings between the couples in the future,
Therefore, to settle this problem acceptance is the cure even though there are differences.

Reflections on Lessons Learned.

Basically, although this week lecture class was rather short and simple due to the reason that there was not much thing that could be elaborated regarding the topic on ' Exploration on Analogy Metaphor ', but we enjoyed doing the task which was given by Mr. Radzi Bedu to be completed during the class hours. This task includes the fact that we have to pair up two words into a singular noun, producing a new word from the two words and producing a drawing from our own imiginition regarding the words that we created earlier. Aside from that, Mr. Radzi Bedu also delivered a short lecture to us regarding ' Juxtaposition '. Although at first it was rather a difficult topic to understand, but in my opinion it is a good topic to be discussed since not all of us really know what ' Juxtaposition ' is really all about. This includes the statement that, ' Juxtaposition ' is actually a placing of words side by side towards one another transferring their meaning from something that is meaningful and familiar to something that is uncommon phrase to us all. In the same boat, another thing that was been discussed include the true meaning of the terms ' metaphor ' and ' simile ' which are quiet easy to understand since we have learned them during our English grammar lesson. Therefore, as a conclusion we can then categorized ' Juxtaposition ' into two minor categories of analogy which is the ' logical analogy ' and the ' affective analogy '. The ' logical analogy ' can be best described as an analogy which uses similarities in design, structure as well as function in order to connect back with the subject while ' affective analogies ' can be defined as an emotional resemblance analogy.

In Class Exercise.

Generally, for this week class exercise, we were all given three tasks to be completed before the day ends. Although at first, we did not really get the whole picture of what the exercise is all about actually but in the end after doing the three separate tasks, we finally understand that the exercise is not any ordinary exercise which is just for fun. Instead, this exercise actually helps us to think more creatively in order to produce something new based on our thoughts. Although it was a tough exercise in my opinion, since we have to come out with sketches of a drawing of something new from just a word or two, but we really enjoyed doing it and we hope we will have more chances of doing this kind of exercises in the near future. Listed below are the steps that we have to follow in order to complete this week class exercise task :-
  • Copy all the words which are projected on the slide and divide them into 2 different columns.
  • Put a number from 0 - 9 to each of the words given.
  • Think of 3 sets of numbers ranging from 00 to 99.
  • Pair each of the words in the column accordingly to the number that we have chose.
  • Produce a sentence based on the words which we have paired earlier.
  • Visualize the sentence into our own drawing.
  • Make the words that we have paired up them with to become as a single word.
  • Draw something new according to the new word.

Developing a Poem.

Another exercise which we have done during this week Creative Studies lecture was that we have to come out with one romantic poem which is dedicated especially to our loved one which in my case is my girlfriend. However, first of all in order for us to write the poem we must use the word which was given by the Mr. Radzi, and the word that he gave to us for this particular exercise was ' chili '. Therefore, as a result I then finally came out with the poem written below :-

Hey hottie, I love you forever,
Ever since I met you, my entire life changed,
You gave me satisfaction of my life,
When you become the spice of my tongue,
You are hot enough to warmth us both,
Which at the same time melt other heart when they look at your true beauty,
You are tasteful, although you are spicy,
Giving us both a lively strength to lead our daily life,
Your passion and color is very energizing,
Thus making me to love your more and more,
Day by day without feeling bored or tired thinking about you.
